Serious warning especially at night. Don’t get fooled by the 8 seconds of silence. On a computer, try volume 1 and move up from there. On mobile, set it to the first bar.
Or you can kill yourself and set it 100% from the start.
I should move the car out to the driveway, plug the iPad into the aux jack, and turn the volume all the way up on both the iPad and the car radio. It’ll sound like the end of the world in the neighborhood.
Luckily, it gives me 8 seconds to run away so my own ears won’t explode.

Loud comes from my volume knob. Clipping (distortion) is what you get when you make the quiets take up the whole dynamic range, leaving no room for (and therefore chopping off) actual louds.
